Slide 1
Short introduction- who I am and what I'm going to talk about in this presentation.
Slide 2
When I started out, I didn't have a clue what I was doing. I stuck to the things I knew at first and really struggled to get out of my comfort zone.
Slide 3
Visual language helped me with this. Made me understand the various methods of image making and how unrestricted illustration is. Taught me to be playful.
Slide 4
I started to enjoy the briefs a lot more when I didn't stress about them too much, when I started to have fun with what I was doing. Getting creative in these such ways made me realise how great this particular course is.
Slide 5
The illustrated self zine I made for PPP focused on all of the things Ive learnt this year, and gave me the chance to really reflect on my year as a whole. Why these things are important to me...
Slide 6
Scamps and roughs have helped me massively. Ive never been particularly good at composition or layout, therefore working within frames has helped me work on these struggles massively.
Slide 7
Studying other practitioners has also been incredibly valuable to me this year, as I was almost completely new to the illustration world in September. Big heads really inspired me to think outside the box and appreciate all of the wonderful things you can do with illustration.
Slide 8
Studying other practitioners has also helped me to understand my own practice, as well as websites like its nice that, colossal etc. Living with a group of arty people also informs my practice somewhat and I find it incredibly helpful to discuss processes and ideas with them.
Slide 9
The brief i struggled with the most was the vectors. I think I went a little insane during this module.
I know its important to know how to use them, and I would like to give it another go in the future, however I think my interests sway more in the direction of traditional methods.
Slide 10
I guess thats why I enjoyed screen printing so much. I like the hands on process a lot more, I feel like I can connect with something I can hold a lot more than something digital. Next year I would like to expand my skills and knowledge in these areas.
Slide 11
Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed making the gifs, and having a completely different outcome. Making your own images move is exciting. I would never dismiss digital ways of working simply because they're not my forte, but I would definitely like to improve in the future.
Slide 12
Ive also struggled with finding my own tone of voice this year, and at first this really worried me, but now Im quite happy to be on a quest for one. When Im struggling I've learnt that extensive research always helps. I struggled so much with this homeless project, and trying to find a way to illustrate such a sensitive subject, however Im proud of the outcome. Its safe to say I would never have been able to do this a year ago.
Slide 13
In the year to come I aim to build on all of my successes from this year, and improve on all of my weaknesses. I want to keep learning, and to keep being inspired. I can't believe how much I've learnt this year, and how lucky I am to be part of a group of incredibly talented people.
Slide 14
Thank you for listening.
