I went home for Easter weekend, and a friend told me about this project. Her friend's set it up, and she told me to get in touch, as I'm really interested in some voluntary work. After University, I really want to build on my documentary illustration, but I want to document real life issues. I don't want to just read about them and illustrate them, I want to experience them first hand. If I do this during the summer, I will be able to work with far more depth and knowledge and sensitivity when I come back to the UK.
Ive always said that I believe creativity has a powerful impact, and so I have sent an application to volunteer, but with the idea of doing something creative for the timber project.
I have mentioned the possibility of a mural, or to document what they do through illustration. I could then come back, work on various illustrations that communicate the situation in Greece and along the Balkan route, and then potentially approach newspapers etc with the aim to shine a light onto the happenings, as well as the great work people are doing out there.
I sent my application this morning, but it says it may take two weeks to hear back. This isn't a problem as I am applying to go in August. I suddenly feel really inspired to go and help make a difference. It would be incredible if I could use my degree to do this.
There's no money involved, but there is so much more to life than money.
